gas gauge off

hey
got a 1999 F350 today my gauge started at a 1/4 of a tank i got into the truck after work and it steadily climbed to above the full mark. i put diesel in at after driving like 15 miles and still the same thing it is stuck on full. I made sure the cap was on tight anybody got any ideals
