'02 Powerstroke Towing Noise

Occasionally when towing in the summer I get a super lud high pitch squeal sound coming from the engine. It seems to only happen when it is hot outside and I am towing a good size load (7000# or so). The noise also only appears in one particular rpm range so as long as I do not stay in that range I am ok. I am running a mild hypertech tuner but it is a pretty low hp bump. I am always wondering if the turbo is about to blow through the hood when it happens.

Sounds like turbo flutter, if that's the case it can be fixed with an aftermarket turbo fan wheel 50-75 bucks.

My 02 does the same thing only when towing and going up a hill only when its hot. I put a different turbo on and that didn't cure it. What else could it be?
I heard of another 02 doing this also.

It's probably the belt when the a/c is running, usally does it at higher rpm's. I have put belt dressing on and fixes it for a short time. Your best bet is to check your belt to see if it needs replaced

Its turbo surge, I bet it happens in the 1600-2100 rpm range. An ATS compressor housing will fix it, a differant compressor wheel will fix it on some trucks. You can also change the exhaust housing and that will push the surge range out to where you will not have it...

It isn't surge, cause I swapped turbo's and nothing changed. I never run the a/c when towing. Once it starts screeching I let off and it still goes on for a little bit.
