ticking ro knocking?????????? or torque converter

i was getting ready to pull my jeep to a wheeling trip and when i pulled into the driveway it sounded really rough... sounded like it was coming from the engine. but when i put it into gear, the noise when away for the most part...than when i actully drove forward or backward no noise execpt for idol in gear. it made the noise in park and nuetral. i just got this 99 f250 psd a week ago and they said when i got it the swaped a new 01 7.3 psd into it. could they have just not tightend down something or could it be like my mechanic said and a valve guide. or could it be something as simple as a loose wire.

Gwilliamson, ford psd newbie

might be a cracked fly wheel or bearing. my dads truck was doing the same thing last week. we had to replace the flywheel and rebuld the transmission

honestly buddy the way you discribe it, it doubt its a cracked flexplate because that should get worse in gear. Im thinking your right on about the torque converter. Ive heard this before and while not being there i cant tell you for certantly, my "hunch" says thats gonna be it....

it was the flex plate cracked all the way around the crank flange.

sorry i didn't post results earlier... and the next thing you know my t conver. went out along with the tranny blowing a front seal. i swaped in a reman and new torq conv. and all problems went away for about a week untill the new flexplate was cracked, it is in the shop right now cuz i'm sick of pulling trannys... i guess for put in a new motor before i bought it. so i think something is tweeked.

this is what is was, in addition to 2 missing studs on the adapter plate coming off the block, the tranny was twisting and the crankshaft block was galled out from the first flexplate that great bear ford put on, when this second flexplate was wrecked i took it to a transmission shop and he went through it with me. so if you crack a flex plate, make sure that plate is not galled out and the studs are in place.
