IDM problems ? superchip?

I have a 2001 ford f250 air filter /exhaust/ superchip(grey one 2004) My truck needed to have the computer reflashed to get it to start . It would just crank and nothing . did the cps and checked fuel but everything came out good. It only has 60,xxx miles on it. The starting had been an intermittent (3 or 4 times in a year)problem after sitting a couple weeks , but always started after a couple tries, and then ran fine. a good ford mechanic flashed the computer and it started and ran fine , He says my programer has made the IDM deteriorate and it's going to need to be replaced. Does this sound right?? where and can I buy a refurbish IDM a or should you fork out the cash for a new 1?? Any suggestions thanks jay. BTW I baby the truck and it's not the starter , i have already put a newer style 1 on.
