DRAMATIC decrease in mileage, boost issue?please help!
I have a 2000 F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke, 6 spd. manual transmisison. I have an AFE intake, ATS antisurge compressor housing, 4" mandrel bent exhaust, and edge juice with attitude. Im coming up on right around 100,000 miles. Everything runs great. HOWEVER.... lately, within the past month or so, it started acting weird. The boost pressure goes up extremely fast, regardless of load. Its almost like the turbo is more RPM based now instead of throttle/load. It will hit almost full boost (24 psi) in first gear if I romp on it. The rest of the gears it increases so fast its hard to keep it under 15 psi..... its incredibly faster feeling than before, but its killing my mileage. I own an import fabrication shop, but im not very familiar with diesel engines. I already checked all of the basics- the wastegate actuator works properly and moves freely. No diaphragm tears. No breaks in the wastegate reference hose or any other related hoses. The boost control valve appears to be working, but i am not 100% sure. It seems although the wastegate will not open until 24 PSI, and it didnt used to do this. I am wondering if the only reason the wastegate is opening is because the exhaust pressure is actually opening it. Im not sure....or is there another problem that I have no idea about? Maybe a fuel pressure issue? All i know is 7 to 9 mpg isnt cutting it with my 50 mile daily commute. Any help would be appreciated. thank you guys! -Richard
