00 PSD no crank/start...sometimes

Hello,

About a week ago my Excursion was running great. Drove it to my destination and after about an hour of it sitting, tried to start and got nothing. Lights, WTS, radio...everything works. I can hear the ignition switch click. After about 15 minutes of dinking around, pulling out fuses (inside the cab), making sure they are all pushed in good, I just for giggles tried to start. It did. So I drove it home.
The next 4 days it started fine and I just drove it for short trips and parked it. My wife got her nerve back up to drive it and took it to the grocery store (about a 10 minute freeway drive). It did the same thing as above. This time I checked the fuses under the hood, all look good but pulled them out to make sure no corrosion. Could no get it to crank. As I slammed the hood, my wife hit the lock button on the key fob. She tried one last time to start and it did. She drove it home and as soon as she turned it off in the driveway she tried to re-start and got nothing. Tried again and it started.
Today, I checked the fender solenoid & have power at all terminals. Checked all fuses again inside & out, good. Ignition switch, good. Alternator, good. Interstate batteries are a little over a year old, good.
What would make it be so intermittent on starting? Seems to start fine cold, but after running is when the problem seems to start. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like a bad starter to me.. Maybe you can hear the starter gear engaging, but the actual starter motor is on its way out. But it could also be the stater solenoid, those are pretty cheap and super easy to replace, a lot easier than the actual starter!

Next time it does it I'd get someone to hold it in the crank position and check to see if the exciter wire on the starter solenoid is getting voltage. If that checks out then I'd see if the starter solenoid itself is jumping across. If that checks out then I'd bet that the starter is on it's way out.

Thanks for the response! I have been waiting for it to not start now so I can try the exciter wire (of course it starts right up now when I want to check something). It does start right up, no problem when I hold a screwdriver across the terminals of the solenoid.

That sounds to me like its a bad solenoid then, if it works by holding a screwdriver across the terminals. I actually just replaced mine last night, I got it at autozone for $20
