this sounds like it may be a common problem with these transmissions. my best friend is signing over to me his 2000 f350 7.3 since he says i need it more than he does, he already has other vehicles, and my 6.0 crapped out like the pieces of chit it is. anyway he is the original owner after 109k miles, and besides the routine maintenance has only had a camshaft sensor, and the transmission go. actually we got another one for it, but haven't put it in yet. he lost overdrive at about 93k miles or somewhere around there. everything was fine until about 108 when it started to slip in almost every gear, and shift so hard it would throw you from your seat literally. one day we were moving stuff with it, and were at the 7-11, and reverse totally went out. we had to actually wait for the other people parked on either sides of us were gone, and had to go over the curb to get it out of there. on the way back about 40 miles later only first, and second were working. we had to use the hazzards for about 20 miles because we were on the parkway up here in jersey, and couldn't exceed 35 mph. it finally went, and we had to call our buddy with his flatbed to tow him out of there. so most likely there is something wrong internally even though i hate to be the bearer of bad news. if you are as lucky as he was you may get some miles before the whole thing is toast. a good rebuilt shouldn't exceed $2000 if you look for the right one. luckily he has a friend who works in a shop, and we got one from servive records is a brand new one the guy had put in his 26k miles approximately before the truck was hit pretty bad in the side, and retired.
