Wheel spacers

Ok guys this may be a dumb question but im gona ask anyways. I got a buddy that wants to sell me some 2005 model stock rims off his truck. I know i would have to run a wheel spacer, my question is can I just run a 1/2" spacer that slips over the stud. I mounted the tires on the front to see how bad they rub the tie rod and even though everything I'v read says i need a 2" spacer it look like I could get away with a 1/2" spacer. Any thoughts?
