New starter clangs and grinds

Installed new starter on 2002, F350, 7.3. Old starter is like the new one. The old starter was clanging and grinding and turned over slow. When installed the new one turned over faster but would clang and grind.
Tested batteries
Checked all battery Cabels
Took new starter back and had it bench tested. No problem
Flywheel teeth have some nicks no missing teeth.

Any suggestions?

Flywheel drive ring was cracked. I had to look really close to see the crack. This put the drive ring out of round. To detect placed a screwdriver between housing and ring gear then rotated the gear by turning the engine with a wrench on the dampner nut.
