New bad fuel pump?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a early 99 250 with 7.3 and 6-spd manual. It has been straight piped, has a DB tuner, the injectors, glow plugs, wiring harmess and fuel filter were replaced about a month ago. The tank was also cleaned about 6 months ago. On monday I stopped for fuel but when I got back on the expressway it felt like it was running under a little bit of a strain that I wrote off as maybe poor diesel fuel. On my way home from work tuesday evening it was still running the same way, when I pulled in to the neighborhood it started skipping and sputtering and I barely made it to the house. It doesn't show any codes but we figured out wed that it was the fuel pump. Because it was 7pm and I needed the truck I had no choice but to go to advance auto parts and get a pump (Airtex). After we installed it, primed the system it fired right up and had a miss for a few minutes but it went away, figured air was in the system. It ran fine all day yesterday until last night it started skipping and sputtering again, I was under a quarter of a tank so I put some fuel in it hoping maybe the gauge was off and it was running on fumes. The truck ran the same way for a mile or two in stop and go traffic then suddenly started running fine except it has that "strain" feeling again and a lot of banging/panging. Is it possible that I bought a bad fuel pump that went out or is on it's way out within 100 miles? Could it be sucking air into the system and that is what is causing the banging? One more thing is my alternator went out this week too, could something have taking both it and the fuel pump out or is it probably just a coincidence? thanks for any help |

you need to do, whats called the HUTCH mod. Look it up, it removesthe crappy filtration inside the tank, re-routes the "return" line, insidethe tank, and you install an inline filter..(3007 from Napa), prior to the pump.
A quick fix wud probably be, removethe "return" line from bowl, and shoot compressed air in it, shooting the crap thats built up inside the tank, off/away from ur pick-up foot....no need for a lift pump... Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page |

We blew the tank out when we determined it was the fuel pump to make sure there wasn't a blockage. The tank was also cleaned around 5000 miles ago. I'm going to check in to the hutch mod, looks like a headache saver down the road. I set around and thought about it all weekend watching football. I'm going to change the fuel filter again just in case even though the one I have only has around 2500 miles on it.

I changed the fuel filter and everything seems to be okay now so I'm going to keep an extra filter in the truck from now on.
I've also been told I need to keep a CPS in the truck as well and that the blue one from IH is the one to buy. Can someone tell me where I can buy IH parts from? I can't find anything local to me and any luck on the internet. |

google "7.3 cps", and find a thread pertaining to readouts. I believe "woodnthings" did a perdel reading for each sensor. The black, if you can find it, is the one you want, if not, the dark grey/charcoal one, for the OBS trucks are next on list.
