STRANG SOUND!!!
i have a 99 f350 powerstroke with 143,000 miles, in mint condition. if has AFE intake, gauges, and magnaflow turbo back exhaust. It seems to run fine but sometimes it makes this weird noise. its like a mix between a rattle from a vibration and like a loose pulley or something. Its hard to pin point where its coming from but the sound is louder from underneath the truck. The sound goes away at higer rpms and sometimes the sound isnt there, but most of the time it is. could it be bad bearings in the turbo or something? Thanks.

Ha mine does the same thing. I am totally new to diesels and just bought a 99 F250 with 120 000 miles and in damn good shape. It almost sounds like clutch chatter and comes on at low rpms.

Could be the belt tensioner.

mine does that too!
i dont think its you bushings in your turbo cuz if it were that you would be low on engine oil. i think that you need a overhead adjustment. rockers tend to loose there ajustment but dont worry. unless we all got bent pushrods!lol no really get an overhead adjustment. the noise should go away.

Me To!
Mine does the exact same thing. It almost sounds like spark knock on a gas motor, or clattering ignition points. But it is louder from under the truck. I took off my flywheel inspection cover and checked for loose bolts, nothing. I ran the fuel down thinking it was bad gas, and put some premium diesel in it with some Power Products 911 with Cetane boost, and it's still doing it.
I just bought the truck about 3 weeks ago. 99 with a 7.3 and 124,000 miles in really great shape.. Sure hope somebody the knows can tell us what to do. I think I will check my tensioner pully next, even though that doesn't seem likely. Tom |

i put a new torque converter in my 99 and the rattle went away,or get a high idle kit and turn your idle speed up a touch and the noise dissappears, some sort of service bulletin on these somewhere

Hey not to change subject but did you feel the difference when you put on the magna flo exchaust, how long did it take you and did you have to lowere the tranny or did you just cut it off, thanks steve

did anyone figure out what the rattle is. Mine has the rattle thing just as the transmission changes gears and the turbo starts to spool up. Its been at the ford dealer for two weeks and they have heard the noise and cant locate it. The turck is a 2001 7.3 f350 automatic with out any mods. It also sounds like a spark knock in a gas motor and only happens as it is down shifting. Thanks for any help, Mark

i have a 99 auto with 230??? been making a loud clatter at idle, definatley not the torque converter of turbo or any part of it. this is a loud slow clatter that stops just above idle. if you have ever heard a turbo before it comes apart you would understand a turbo at idle is turning at least 1k rpm. note this truck has been doing this for 75 to 80 k miles
