Loss of power and white smoke, problem comes and goes

Ok, ive been scouring the forums to find a solution to my problem, but I cant find a thread that really fits my symptoms, or a thread that the solution didnt end up being something Ive already fixed. The problem comes and goes. The truck runs fine most of the time, but about every 50 miles or so the truck starts blowing white smoke, and wont drive over 10 mph, and runs extremely rough at idle (knocking and cutting off). If the truck is turned of and started over and over a few times, it will go back to running normal and do the same thing ofter 20-50 miles. The first time it happened, I replaced the entire fuel system from the tank all the way to the injectors becuase i was getting codes sugesting that most of the fuel system components were bad. It drove fine for anout 100 miles and started doing the same stuff again. I looked back through the system and found that the part the pulls fuel out of the tank was loose and after doing a smoke test found that air was getting into the lines. Fixed that problem and again the truck went about 100 miles and has started to do the same thing again. Most white smoke cases ive found suggested that the O-rings on the injectors needed to be replaced or that it needed head gaskets, but correct me if Im wrong but it seems like if that were the issue that problem shouldnt come and go. So i dont know what else to check. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
