This seems to be an intermittent problem. Some days my auto 4x4 engages and other times it won't. When it does engage I can here the vacuum pump working and other times not. Is this whole pump the issue. Dealer wants 235.00 for a new one but before I go there is there anything else I'm missing. Lots of snow and ice around here and its a bear during take off
I would be checking for a vaccuum leak at the hubs or the lines going to the hubs. That is usually the problem.
What I would do is manually lock in the hubs and see how your 4wd is working. Is it shifting into 4wd like it should. If so then it is a hub/vaccuum problem.
I have a 2002 with 227,000 miles on it. I have yet to have to replace the vaccuum pump.
I am having the same problem right now. I have an 02 f-350 with the manual/auto hubs and I cannot get the 4x4 to auto engage, but if I manually lock the hubs it will go right into 4 wheel drive.
