loud sound

hey guys i rebuilt my motor back in march. well my truck has been down at g&r diesel for the past 4 months. it wouldn't start for the longest time. when they got it started i has a loud tick sound coming off the passenger side. is it possible that the valves are unseated and when the pistons hit them they make that sound? if so would a new head make that sound go away. i have been without my truck for almost 9 months. please help if you can.
