power steering help

have a hard time turning at slow speeds like trying to park. noticed that if i touch the brakes while turning the steering wheel will lock up, can't hardly turn it, but if i let off the brake, i can turn it but it is still hard to turn. does that sound like a pump problem, or a gear box problem. i do have some float to the steering but the truck only has 256000 miles also, the pressure line from the hydroboost to the gearbox has developed a pretty good leak on the fitting at the gearbox, does anyone know the size of the o-ring, i think it is 5/16 inside diameter, but i would like to know for sure what size so i can replace it. thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like a PUMP.....I have been searching on this forum about P/S problems, to see what the deal is, cause mine moans all the time, worse when turning or stepping on the brake...and looses some asist when doing both. I have looked at about 10 threads related to P/S and the general conclucion is that the pumps tend to go out.... Also have read that some people use mercon V or Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in the P/S system to help out....one guy eliminated his moan by changing out his fluid to the synthetic.

I'd have to agree with tweener. My 96 is in the same boat. But my pump is completely gone. It blew up on Mamorial Day weekend. I am just strong arming it until I can afford to replace it.
