I want to run some vertical stacks

I want to run some vertical stacks but want to know if doing so will hurt the motor or performance. Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

stacks give no real performance gain over a strait pipe.....there may be even a minimal....and when i say minimal it will be VERY small........but anyway there may be a loss of performance compared to a strait pipe due to the sharp bend causing the exhaust not to move as easily...but i dont think it will be even measurable......

the only thing to watch for with stacks is to make sure they are either capped with a hinge cap or bent at the top so you can make a cut to make them not open to rain from the top (like a semi). if you fill them with water during a heavy rainstorm it can actually casue a HUGE restriction in the exhaust till the water evaporates....and even small amounts of rain will cause a lot of steam coming out of hte stacks....but if you like the look there is no measurable loss between them and a standard strait pipe.......Marc

Hey Marc, while your on it, do you think there is a performance gain from straght pipe vs. a 4inch exhaust with muffler like with my banks kit? I am going in the morning to have the muffler taken out. I did the original kit myself, but did not like the quality of the design. My hangers didn't all line up, I actually had to drill a couple holes in the frame to move some of the OE mounts around. And I'm talking like 2 inches. That was not fun. But even the mounts I am using, the muffler is so heavy that the whole exhaust sways and actually part of it bumps underneath and its annoying. So the main reason is to get the heavy muffler out of the system.

Running stacks will not hurt your truck. Like mentioned above, depending on what kit or how you install it will determine how many holes, or bent pipes you have. For rain issues, as long as it is a daily driver, you shouldn't have any problems. Now if the trucks sits for days or weeks on end, thats a different story. You can get rain caps for straight stacks, or you can use plastic coffee cans.....

honestly i dont know if your gonna see much difference in just taking the muffler off an exhaust that was 4 inch already.....but a restriction is a restricion so even if you can feel it, it is helping.....Marc

Might Be A Problem Running Stacks

Since I'm over here in Iraq I had my buddy check the underside of my rig to see if there was anything he thought would prevent me from running vert stacks. He looked at it last night and has concerns that the one pipe might run too close to the fuel tanks and said that the tank might have to be relocated....has anyone out there had this problem? Please advise

Most kits, the Y-pipe will run IN the bed. The reason for this is because of the fuel tank. Depending on what you use your truck for, this may or may not be good. Most people I've delt with did not have a serious issue with it, but then again I have had a few that did.

yep...that will probably be my problem...i can afford to loose the corners but i cannot loos eve a few inches all the way across...i put long choppers in the back alot so it would prevent the fron wheel from securing against the front bed wall. i thought that the exhaust would split prior to coming up through the bed and i would have to cut one big hole in each corner....i guess that just blows that idea....maybe i'll just look at making it into duals either exiting in front of the wheels or straight out the back....any advice on which of these would be best??? any kits in mind???
