Transfer Case Shifter!

I drive a 97, 7.3 4x4.

So about a month ago my I let my girlfriend drive my truck (bad idea) well she went to shift it into 4 wheel drive and she pressed so hard the shifter actually snapped from the metal connector. I went to my local shop to see about getting in fixed and they said that they dont make them that way anymore and it would cost me $400 for basicaly a whole new set up. I was wondering if there was anyway of getting it back to working without ordering a new transfer case shifter set up.
I have the shifter and have to go under the truck to move the metal slide to get it into 4x4. Anyone got any ideas?
