starter problems

i think my starter may be going out. this will be my third in 2 years. anybody else having problems? gal at napa said i needed to put a heat shield on . does anyone know where to find one ? 99 pstroke . makes a sound similar to noise made when turning ignition of car already running. thanks delfire5

So you are getting a grinding sound from your starter. It could be your flywheel. If your starter and flywheel are not meshing properly you will get this. The only way to actually see it is if you drop the tranny out and look at the flywheel and inspect it for damage. Also pull out the starter and inspect the abendix as well for damage or premature wear. As your starter can be the cause. If it is the starter, what is happening is the starter is not engaging fully so you get a grinding sound. I suggest if you do replace the starter get a lifetime warranty starter for your truck. Also another thing to check is the starter bolts as they like to viberate loose.
