Cheaper to rebuild or buy a crate motor

I got an early 99 that i was driving and lost oil pressure and she started knocking and I havent tore into it yet to figure it out but would it be cheaper to buy a crate motor or to rebuild it myself if i have to. i am wanting to add a few goodies to it. The sad thing is it only had 136,000mi on it and i have only owned it for 6 months and any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Rebuild it if it's not completely trashed. The machine shop can tell you if it can be saved. It will be much cheaper to rebuild, I would think, but I have never done a powerstroke.

Paid $5500 for my new long block. Had to change over turbo and injectors from the old motor... I love my new motor but definitely rebuild if you can.
