A/C compressor problems
I think my A/C compressor is about to seize up. When HVAC control set to defrost or A/C, I hear squealing and smell rubber (serpentine belt) burning. When HVAC switched off, I sometimes hear a growling sound from under hood. Local (MD area) dealer wants $340 for compressor. Where can I get it cheaper? How good are the remanufactured compressors? How hard to install compressor? Thx, Kevin

You can't install a compressor at home. Period. Some people might, but it's impossible to do it correctly without the proper equipment. The system has to be evacuated with a machine (everything sucked out), replace compressor, drier, orifice tube, then put new oil in, and the proper amount of refrigerant with the machine. Take it to a reputable, privately owned shop.
