Ok guys truck is dead

Hoping that someone can help me out. I have been browsing the threads and seeing what to check. I started my truck up this morning and while it was idling it started surging and died. I changed the fule filter which wasn't bad but in need of change. The truck is on an incline so I can't get a good reading of tehe oil level but there is no oil pressure when it turns over. Starter fluid will crank it but when it cranks it runs like crap. Anybody know what I should check?

Oh yes I forgot the tach does move when it turns over. All the lights come on normal and go off like they should and it sounds right when it is spinning over it just won't crank.
