I installed Riffraff up pipes and updated the fuel fittings on the back of each head with JIC elbows and heat warped hydraulic hose. Nothing in the valley now. But, I now have oil weeping down the driver's side rear corner of the engine. Drips off the clutch inspection cover about every two seconds. I can't see where it's exactly coming from, so I took the turbo and pedestal back off. Nope, completely dry all the way around the oil ports and top rear of the engine. WTH! It appears to be leaking right behind the driver's side head??? I have no idea why it's leaking their since I did the install? Their were no engine leaks prior (knock on wood), I'm anal about that. An inspection camera would be handy. I'm going to re-torque the rear valve cover bolts, just in case I supported myself on it at some time. I don't know what else could leak in that area?
There are oil gallery plugs at the back of each head that have an o ring on them. It could be one of those, not the most fun job but they can be taken out and replaced with the motor in the truck but the turbo will have to come out and possibly the up pipes. I did mine when I was replacing the up pipes so they were already out of the way. I did both sides as preventative maintenance.
Good point, thanks, I didn't think of that because they didn't leak before the up pipe install and were not touched. I'm going to get a borescope for my not so smartphone today.
I wiped down what I could get to and cleaned everything when I had the turbo and pedestal off. I could then see with a borescope and mirror, that their were no leaks from the oil valley plug or the valve cover gasket. So after more thought, I folded a paper towel the long way and slipped it edge wise down around the top (pedestal) corner and the back of the head. That would clearly indicate were the leak was originating from. Eureka! It was fuel, NOT OIL. Embarrassing! The fuel weeping over all the oily crude in the v back there, made the dripping fuel look and smell just like oil. The fuel fitting I replaced, was leaking and I had cranked it down and applied some Gasolia to the threads. So the turbo and pedestal comes out today again (I'm getting good at that, ~2 hrs out and in) and I'm going to install a new 45 degree hydraulic JIC fitting with 4 wraps of yellow Teflon tape on it. I could not tighten the 90 degree fitting any more or the hose fitting nut would contact the intake plenum edge. The leak was small and thin which ran down between the head and the up pipe flange. I could never see the area directly.
