Torque Converter Problems

My friend bought a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 and an Automatic Transmission. It drove awesome for about 600 miles then all of a sudden a very loud grinding noise is coming from the torque converter. It only does this at idle as soon as you give it throttle it goes away. The torque converter and flex plates where just replaced 1000miles before he got it. We also noticed that the transmission bell housing has been rewelded very recently and we think the housing is warped and its screwing up the flex plates. Also what is the sensor on top of the transmission because when it started making that noise the truck will crank but will not start. I was wondering if it had anything to do with the starting system.

It actually sounds like it has 2 different problems. For the TC grinding; I'd have the tranny removed & get that bellhousing replaced 1st & foremost. Check the condition of the TC & look for cracks, dents, etc. If the TC is no good, I'd replace it with a billet TC if your friend has the $$$. Only because billets are stronger, & make a big difference in the truck's performance. As far as the no start, it sounds like it could either be IDM or CPS related. When you're cranking the engine, keep an eye on the tach. If it doesn't move or moves really sporatically, it's most likely a CPS. If that checks out fine, you'll need to get your hands on a scan tool that can perform functional tests. Run a buzz test on it & see if any IDM codes pop up.

Sensor ontop of the transmission. There should not be a sensor on the top of the transmission. It maybe a vent hose attached to a fitting on the top of the trans.

But as for your grinding I would have the torque converter inspected. The grinding maybe the bolts hiting the inspection plate. Which you hear at idle but due to engine noise you can't here anymore. But best to have it looked at.

The bellhousing is aluminum. There for it must have been tig welded backtogether. I highly doubt it is warped. But if it needs to be replaced you need to have the whole transmission housing replaced. The bellhousing is part of the transmission case. Unless it is the bell housing section bolted to the engine. Which in that case that part can be replaced.

Now As for your crank will not start. I believe that is not related to your transmission at all. Most likely that is a seperate issue. In which I would first start by scanning for trouble codes. Checking the battery voltage, and go from there.
