how to get rid of the slop in the gearshifter

I just picked up a 2000 E-350 van and it has alot of slop in it to the point where sometimes it doesnt even shift into park. The guy I bought it said there's a piece by in the steering console that you replace that cures it. He said it's some sort or fork type and its only supposed to be like $30? Anyone know what piece i'm talkig about? stop at the local ford dealer and they had no idea what i was talking about.

Thanks

Dave

There's 2 bolts, with nuts on the end down underneath the dash. They hold the shifter assembly to the shift cables that come off the tranny.Well more or less thats what they do. If you shine a light down between the dash and the steering column you can see them.

Tighten those, and you shouldn't have anymore slack. They tend to loosen up over time.

You can reach them from the top, you'll have to get to them from underneath the dash.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Sorry for the crappy explanation, its hard to explain in words.

And actually not that i think about it, the bolts don't have nuts i dont think. They just thread into a fitted/welded on/attached nut if that makes any sense.
