Run wire through door

I tried to run a usb cord into my door because I want keep my ipod in their since I went to a F-650 dash.

I tried for a good hour to run it through the little boot from the cab to the door. Would someone who has done mirror swaps enlighten me on how you ran the wires through the door/cab boot? I tried a straightened metal hanger but I couldn't even get the hanger through the boot as it at such an odd angle and twists. I am half tempted to drill a new hole in my door and cab and run my own boot and grommets. That way in the future when I put on newer mirrors, I can easily run the wires.

Also, any way to reach where the wires come through the cab from the door easier? Its a super tight squeeze up there behind the parking break module.

You guys got any ideas that have done this in the past?

Thanks

I use an old thin coat hangar.

When I did my power window and lock swap I pushed the whole damn boot through and entire wire harness to remove it and install the newer one.

Save yourself the hassle, unbolt the ebrake, it's 3 bolts IIRC and makes life 100x easier.

Also take the boot out of the door and truck body, it allows for more wiggle

Best "Fish Tape" you an use for stuff like that (doesn't get easily hung-up or do damage) is made from a Long Ty-Rap (like the HVAC guys use on Ducting, they're like 30in and 1/2" wide). It pushed well, good surface area for tape to hold wire, and is Cheap!

Buy a long ziptie lil 2 to 3 feet. Cut the big eye end off. That's what we use in the stereo shops to run into boots/dash/ under carpet. Saves time and headaches. Also on your boot just pull it off the door its just pressure fitted in on both side.

Take the boot from the hole in the door jamb, then you can somewhat see inside the truck. From there, either use a ziptie, coat hanger, fish tape, etc and put it thru the door jamb then get up under the dash and see where it's coming from. On the drivers' side it comes out up above the ECM if I remember correctly. Then it should be easier from there.

If it's still too hard to get from there, take the ECM out.

As far as getting it thru the boot, take it one step at a time. Remove the boot's grommets from the door and door jamb then scrunch the boot together so it's short and fat. You should then be able to get the wire thru the boot.

Then remove the door speaker, put the wire thru the hole in the door where all the wires are and grab it thru the speaker hole.

If need be, I'll do a write-up on this.
