Chip tuning - please educate me

I am new to turbodiesels, by last Ford truck was a mid-80's 6.9L with normal aspiration.

I see chip tuning discussed, and generally understand what it is, but would like to know your opinions of the products of various makers. Ii seems like the ones with a ODBII attached display would make the most sense, but I would like to know more.

Thanks for your help.

Mike

custom tuned chips from DP Tuner, PHP, TW, etc are the best ones for the 7.3s. the "productions chips" like Bully Dog, Edge, Banks, etc dont give you the best performance.

I have the edge juice platinum w/ att. mon. in my 6.0 and i have to say that i have no complaints. it does a lot of stuff, as far as transmission control, turbo timer,on the fly adjustability, gauges. But the edge is the only one i've owned.

No. Bone stock 2001 F350 7.3L CC. I thought a mild tune and better exhaust would add some economy and performance. I tow stuff - but not big stuff.

Ok, were talking about 2 different animals here.

You can chip a 7.3 or use a downloadable tuner ie: SCT

You can only use a tuner on a 6.0 ie: SCT

With a 7.3 you have many options you can select from, several different places to get custom tuning for them as well as off the shelf programing, such as Power Hungry Performance, Diesel Innovations, DP Tuner, Cale at BTS and so on.

Most of the guys with 6.0's will use the SCT and Eric at Innovative does alot of their tunes. There are other tuners out there for the 6.0 as well.

Hope that helps!

Yup as the rest said your best off with a custom tunned chip. The tuners such as bully dog, edge, diablo will give you power but your tranny will hate you and fight back by blowing up. With a custom tunned chip such as TW (tony wildman) or PHP (Power hungry performance) will be built for you exact mods for your truck.

and seeing how your truck is bone stock your gonna wanna read this.
What to get a chip? Read here first!

-gauges
-exhaust
-intake
-chip

Thats what your going to want so you can monitor your temps and have the supporting mods to be safe.

hope this helps
