To run with a 6.0 all you need a chip. However you need to do supporting mods like gauges, intake and exhaust.

IMO unlike the 6.0 (Clay's truck), the 7.3's airbox is very restrictive and the filtration leaves a bit to be desired!

Intake - Tymar - 40 bucks.
Exhaust -just straight pipe it - free if you can weld or use clamps.
gauges - you only need an EGT if you don't plan to tow (50 bucks roughly)
Chip - you can go generic w/ a dptuner sct for under 300 or flash you PCM w/ the 80 econo or 120 race - 80bucks.

There, you're as fast as a 6.0L for 140 bucks.

The only thing I'd recommend over this is getting a full set of gauges, the rest is all kosher.

Two things i noticed about your list is that an SCT is not less then 300 no matter where you get it, and 50 bucks might get you a used guage without a probe. and from AutoMeter the Pyro probe is 50 bucks alone.

To add to the confusion, my buddy has a 05 6.0, We ran last week and he beat me by half a truck legnth. His was pure stock down to the rubber mine only has a homemade straight pipe and intake with the 10k mod. To be honest $800 (TS or DP $ 350) in chips tuners etc. should light up a 6L pretty easily. Its also in whos driving that makes the difference but that torq shift tranny makes a big difference.

Most likely i will pass on the 6.0L engine,

my question is, how much would it take to get the 7.3L PSD to be as quick/quicker than the 04 i test drove last night?

i wont be towing anything big with this truck, if that matter any.

If the 6.0 is stock, the chip alone will do it. The one I outran had stock size tires and I had 285's. Now, if the 6.0 starts modding.........Well, hope you got deep pockets, especially if you get a truck with PMR's.

A superchips adds respectable power...it's not real agressive as far as tuners go but it is one of the more common and popular tuners. Around Oklahoma, i have to say that Superchips is an everyday household name for diesel owners...seems like everyone has one!

I have a superchips 1705 and like it, but I don't care for the shift points. I will stick with it for a while since it was given to me. I think a livewire is in my future

Well I can tell you I didnt race the 6.0 but I did race the 2 wheel drive D-max that beet the 6.0 HARD and I got a truck And a half on him till about the 1/4 mile mark then he started catching me. I run 35 inch tires and he had stock tires minus the weight of 4x4 he had a bit of a weight advantage but as far as we (D-max owner and I) are concerned I kicked hiss a$$
I run Edge Juice with ATT and 4" open exhaust, electric fan (HUGE POWER DIFF) shift kit.
