EDGE performance chips/programmers

Hey I am brand new to this site, but have browsed for quite some time. I have strictly a stock 99 Powerstroke 7.3L Diesel on a 99 F 250 Super Duty Extended Cab 4x4 swb truck. I love it, but I am always interested in more power and better fuel economy. I don't want to get very in depth with my modifying, (I'm not a shop junkie)--A friend of mine who is a great mechanic recommends the Edge Programmer or Chip, I am not exactly sure what he's talking about... Should I do anything with this? I don't want to change exhaust or do any tranny work etc... Is there really a product that I can plug in to the computer of my truck and 5/15 minutes later I have more horsepower and better fuel economy? Will it harm my truck? Why doesn't the factory program these trucks this way? As you can see, I am an average joe... My truck drives me to work during the week, to the duck swamp on the weekend and pulls cattle in between all of that... I'm open to any advise you have for me. Thanks a lot and what a great site!

Hello Duck!

Yes, there are several products that reprogram the computer controls on your engine to gain torque & hp. I run an Edge Evolution on my 1996 truck and have been quite happy with it. I used it before any other modifications and still noticed a difference. I just didn't bump it up to the higher settings.

No, it will not harm your truck if you follow the instructions and take the manufacturer's advice on settings.

The factory tries to set the engines up to be all things to all people by finding the lowest common denominator and setting the engine at that point.

Welcome Duck! I love my Evolution, but I'm sure there is something better out there. I run mine on the "extreme" setting, and haven't taken it off since I installed the gauges. Whatever you do, make sure you install the pyrometer along with whatever chip or programmer you get.

i also have a 99. mine is a late 99, or a 99.5.

in 99 there were two different turbo packages. the early ones were down on power a little. the later ones were teh same from 99 through whenever they quit making the 7.3.
it is probably worth knowing which you have.

the edge apparently works really well on the 6.0's, dodges, and chevies, but tehre are better solutions for the 7.3.

consider teh superchips MT. I have one, loved it. currently it is sitting the shelf. im currently running a jody tipton DP tuner. I like it a lot. adjustable on the fly, great power, great mileage.

i'm running a tymar intake, btm muffler, pyrometer. if you have an auto, you should get a tranny temp gauge.

total cost for everything is under 1000 bucks.

Hey Ducksmasher I have an early 99. I have a TS Performance 6 position chip. Max 140hp. I had a superchip which was great, but the TS chip I have is a lot better. I don't run my TS chip on the higher setting very much. I usually keep it on the 75 tune, but it pulls pretty darn hard for just 75. I have a magnaflow turbo back exhaust. I'd reccomend getting at least an exhaust kit with your chip, otherwise you're completely defeating the purpose of chipping your truck. It's gonna be flowing a lot more air and much quicker too.....plus exhaust will help drop EGT's to much better levels as most chips increase EGT's with the higher performance tunes.

I have the Superchip programmer and it runs very nice but I do not like that to change the program takes me a few minutes to reprogram. I am trading it in tomorrow and having the Edge Juice W/Attitude. This will give me that gauges needed for the high power settings and the safety to back things down to avoid damage. I will update later this week on how it goes.

Sounds good wizard, looking forward to hearing results.

Yeah Marc I see that.....but i've kind of missed out on this whole big oil thing. I am pretty left out, don't know what it is, how it works......why or why it isn't necessary!...

The higher egt issue is in the programing, plain and simple.
