FINISHED MY HX52 INSTALL
Well good news, i finished up the installation / changeover to my HX52 turbo. All i have to day is it freaking ROCKS!!!
![]() After i got all the hoses to stay on the truck, it just works sweet except for one minor (possibly major) issue that i want to get all your thoughts on. Basically the turbo gets really noisy once the oil warms up, i watch my oil temp gauge and as soon as it hits about 140-150 the thing just starts whining. its a high pitched whine almost sounds like a bearing. So my thoughts are 1 of 2 things, one being the turbo bearings and the other being the oil. I have a hard time believing the turbo bearings because the turbo was brand new, but hey you never know. Also the shaft play is hardly any and feels just like a new turbo. I think it may be the oil because powerstrokes oil runs foamy, so im thinking that once the oil heats up its basically just blowing foam up into the turbo and the turbo is starving for oil. let me know what you guys all think. Anyone else had this problem with a changeover to the big boy turbos? |

oh ya and i forgot to say that im only running the everyday castrol 15-40 diesel oil. So no synthetic. So i figure either try a rebuild kit for $100 on the turbo or try synthetic for basically $100, or maybe both, thoughts?

Its a new turbo, I wouldnt figure it would need a rebuild kit. Was it new oil you put in when you hooked that bad boy up? Also if it were me I would be runnin synthetic.

Maybe the turbo just needs to get some miles on it before it will run normal!

are you being serious? so i should not worry? ive installed lots of turbos and this is the first one thats done that.

I find this interesting.. And I have absolutely no idea. Maybe thats just the way the big boy turbos sound. Sorry man I got nothin.

i have installed some (not all) turbos that were very loud when first installed and then they quieted down after time. does yours sound like a metallic squeel or just bearing noise (not sure how to describe it)

ummm... i dont know how to describe it either. Its like meeeewwwwwwwww.... and its pretty constant. once warm and you hit 5 psi its just a constant high pitched whine doesn't change. Not as high pitched as when the turbo spools up but annoying. Like when its spooled up at 30+ psi you cant hear it because its drowned out.

What size feed line are you running -4an? or -6? oil gets thinner as it gets hotter.
