honest answer

i have a 2001 psd 2x4 dually
7.3 w 6 speed
i would like to increase the power to around 300 rear wheel hp
i have done a 4 inch exhaust kit and have around 1000 to play with
also i ahd a 97 dodge with a 12v that i wrecked that had around 350 rwhp
i have contiplated a swap even ordered a manuel to see whats involved
this truck dosent get a turbo kick until almost 2700 rpm it has 220000 miles but still starts in freezing conditions first try even after a week of not driving unpluged so i think the engine is sound so what would some of you guys do?
thanks darrin

first of all, i guess i might be not understanding you....were you talking about putting a new engine in your ford, or talking about trying to stuff that cummins out of your old truck in the ford when you said "swap".......as far as the truck goes, i would say you may have a turbo issue, that is way to high of an rpm for the turbo to just be coming in at......which also would make me wonder if the turbo is dusted.....which would also put some doubt to the engine. dusted motors dont always show bad start ups......but it could be a stuck wastegate or numerous other things, so without more info, its kinda tough to say. all and all, if it has been maintained very well, that motor is relatively low milage.....just broke in....but that all hinges on the maintanence record on it, it could also be just about worn out......Marc

that makes me wonder about the turbo it whistles from about 1200 up but dosent give you that thrust until 2600, hard to say about motor feels smooth and fairly strong compaired to my last psd a 96 ton 4 door dually . as far as the swap goes, thats what i was interested in the 12v in my superduty but i would give the 7.3 a chance, as for the starting my 96 psd wouldnt hardly start in 40 deg weather much less the teens

i dont even want to imagine what kind of a nightmare it would be to swap to the cummins......wiring harnesses, module communications, insterment cluster, speed controll.....this isnt like the pre-computer days where you could put any engine in anything no problem, and if a customer came to me wanting me to do that swap, i wouldnt even consider it. as far as your turbo, take the air inlet tube off (that runs from the air filter) and inspect the inlet vains on the turbo.....if they are all knicked up and chipped......the turbo is "dusted" from poor air filtration. if not, you have something else going on or it is operating properly. the turbo runs of the exhaust gas, so the more RPMs the more it pushes.......and the 6 speeds feel quite a bit different in the way the engine accelerates....you may be just not used to the way it feels.

the 12v is a manual engine no eletronics what so ever even has a manual lift pump with a fuel plate exhaust and a $200 set of intectors along with 16 deg of timing = 350 rwhp back to the turbo im getting a back pressure valve code i was thinking of removing the turbo but it looks like a pretty good job ever attempted it?

the turbo on th 01 isnt that big of a deal, but i wouldnt pull it off just to pull it off, you need to do more research on the code first. as far as the engine swap, you still have to deal with all the electronics that the truck already has, and what effects (warning lights, etc) you will have putting the cummins in. also, how are you planning on controlling your acceleration. the PSD is a fly by wire system so there is no throttle cable.....im not sure on the cummins....and then you have to deal with how to get vacume if you have vacume brakes (im not that familiar with the cummins since im a ford tech) and how to deal with the powersteering lines if you have hydroboost, along with the powersteering lines that are to the gear, the A/C compressor and lines, if the exhaust will even match up, and how radiator lines and the cooling fan will fit. your going to have to adapt fuel lines at the motor.....sounds like a nighmare to me.....you may lose ABS, power window controlls, and a ton of other stuff if the PCM in the ford is flaking out due to not having a motor to recognize.....the ford is just too new to do this with. the only way i could see it working in a ford is if it was an old 6.9 or IDI 7.3

lol the engine harness should be self contained like the mustang and ranger ones you use all the dodge pulleys as well as ac and ps they even make an adapter to convert the zf6 trans to the 5.9 the radiators interchange as well as intercooler. you use the for sending units and factory gauges work a tach adapter for 45 buck and factory tach work the swap is a fairly easy one there are sites on the net that show step by step how 2 . i more worried about the turbo i guess i should go ahead and install my gauges and see what type of boost i get it may be that 2600 is peak power and the feel is its sweet spot?

yea, that may be all your feeling......what was the code you got.....p047?.... the ebp controll valve is used strictly to warm the motor and coolant faster. it is not even allowed to function at high load or high speed, so i wouldnt think that would be affecting you. ask any of the guys here who have driven both trans types....and they will tell you the 6 speed is a totally different feeling beast......and to top that off it has low gears through second and then spaces them out more to allow maximum take off torque without having to have a 550 gear in the rear end.....so they dont drive the same as the auto does.....let me know if i can help ya with anything else on it, and if you get me the code, i can let you know what i think......Marc

for 1000 bucks 325 is doable.

egt, tymar, btm, and DP tuner at 120 horse is actually under 500 if you get jody to reprogram your pcm.

then fix whatever problems yours has where it won't pull right.

maybe start with the turbo leaks.
