ZOODAD mod 911

I am doing the mod right now. After cutting through the panel I see there is no air channel behind. I have a thick rubber flap that closes the engine compartment off from the front end area. Do I cut through the rubber or what?

your truck is an early 99 then.....so it draws the air through the fender and not through the front. Unless you do the ford AIS air filter you wont get a benifit from the zoodad mod......

Thanks Marc. Looks like I just made more work for myself. Now I gotta figure out how to channel all that air to my DIY. Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Thanks.

easiest way would probably be to build a rectancgular channel out of some thin metal and rin it to the filter....make it as big as possible to still fit into the hole in the core support

I don't know how you'd mount it, but..... Could you fabricate something using black corrugated drain pipe running from the ZooDad mod up to the Tymar, using a "reverse" funnel fitting at the air filter end to spread the intake air over the filter surface (or at least one side of it)? That might increase the air pressure around the outside of the filter and that MAY help some.

Heck I'll try anything once. I actually have quite a bit of room in that area. I'm trying to figure out the "how to" with the thin sheet metal. Thanks for the help though fellas.

i need to resurrect this. i also have the early 99, but the great owner at the local diesel shop called me a few weeks ago and said he had the upgraded Ford air intake that Ford offered for the early 99 upgrade - looks similar to the Ford AIS intake. someone just had it removed and upgraded to a Stage 2, and left this old one at the shop! the owner was busy, but he halted work and threw this intake in for me for free. but whatdya know, i still have that same rubber flap in there... i just pulled off the grill to do the zoodad, and noticed that the flap was there - and it lays flush right over the air intake square tube which is thrusting forward past my battery to the rear of the radiator support fiberglass wall. i'm excited to discover that simply removing this old rubber flap is going to raise my performance. i think the only thing that's allowed air in there is that the installer cut a hole in the side of the air filter box to allow air in from the fender well where the early 99 air box pulled it from. i started the truck to observe the "flap action" and whatdya know, it immediately sucked the flap flush with the front of the square air intake pipe, strangling it! i tucked the rubber flap away to the side of the air intake pipe, and the rush of air past my hand was awesome. can't wait to finish this zoodad, and hit the road. can't even imagine how my truck has been suffocating without this air. i've been getting about 16 on hwy, so i think it might improve. i gotta find my cam and snap some pics. thanks guys!
UPDATE: i drove for an hour straight on every back country road i could find, up hills, etc. so THAT's what turbo whine sounds like! oh ya, i laid on the cruise control button on a straightaway and took it to 90 easy. what a nice change. it really must have been strangled before.
