I know the stock Allisons don't hold anywhere near 600hp reliably. A programmer on an otherwise stock truck will make them slip. To do the conversion is going to cost you way more than to just have your 4R100 built.

It sounds like you've been a little misinformed on the trannys. A stock 4R100 might have a weaker center support but a built one has an upgraded one that is plenty strong. The heavy duty load in itself isn't going to make it snap. However a big power engine with a large shock load might. I dynoed at 466 on fuel only (due to the tiny HX40 tubo) and 739hp with spray. I made several passes at the track with the nitrous hitting instantly. In fact so hard it would make the tires bark in 4WD. I did finally bust something and have no forward gears but do have reverse. This tells me the power flow through the tranny (the shafts) is still fine. I'm guessing a clutch or something is what busted. I'll find out in a week or two. But if the center shaft and bearing support can handle that it'll certainly handle anything a little 400-450hp can dish out.

I think you need to actually get your truck to that power range and do your tow/hauling and see how it does. With the broad power band these engines have and as high as they rev the extra gear is really unneeded. And like I said the 4R100 is actually more like a 6 speed than anything as the converter will lock and unlock in 2nd and 3rd basically splitting those two gears.

How much do you think it's going to cost to go either route. I'm sorry but I just don't see having the 4R100 build being anywhere close to the price of buying a built Allison and having the adaptors made, and installing a stand alone controller. A very quick look I find Suncoast sells their built Allison for $3800. A BTS is currently running $4100. You are going to be WAY more than $300 in adaptors. And probably double that or more for a stand alone controller. And I really doubt you'll actually have a stronger tranny. If you're all hung up on the name Allison don't let me stop you from wasteing your money. But if you want a strong tranny just give Brian at BTS a call and you'll be set!

What rpm range is it you're trying to keep it in pulling these hills anyway? And rolling on tires like the ones on your truck in the pic and then screaming economy is contradictory at best.

Now that I'm looking at Suncoast's web site a little closer it appears that $3800 doesn't include the coverter for another $1800. The BTS trannys do include the converter for $4100. There is no comparasin in cost. 4R100 is WAY cheaper.

If the extra gears gives you a pup tent then go to the 6 speed manual. Could be a lot cheaper too. Just my .02 worth. I like my 4r100. Still stock and towing 28K up and down hills. Yea, I'm not the first one there, but I always come back in one piece. One other thing is that your Pop has the truck payments and you most likely don't. Consider that.

Give Brian at BTS or John at John Wood Automotive a call and see what those two say. I can guarantee that those two guys make a stout transmission. I will never own a SunToast, too many guys I know have had to eat a blown slushbox because they found one reason or another to not honor their warranty.
I was ready to convert to a bolt action(stick shift). I lost my trans while in Southern California so I had John Wood build my trans. I tow(10K trailer) and race(drag race and sled pull).

10-second ¼-mile with 1250 horses under the hood(Mad Dog)....What trans does this guy have in his truck? 4R100 built by John Wood

Blowby(Mike) just put down 1038hp in his powerstoke. What trans does this guy have in his truck? 4R100 built by Brian(BTS)

Zane is making just short of 900hp and running in the 10's. What trans does this guy have in his truck? 4R100 built by Brian(BTS)

Another orange dodge truck I saw with my own two eyes had twins, juice and running a 4R100 because the dodge trans could not hold up to his 1400hp. What trans does this guy have in his truck? 4R100 built by John Wood

What is all done to your truck to warrant such a radical swap to an allison? I never have any problems even accelerating with a load on any mountain I have come across in the US or Canada. Again, it has everything to do with setup.
