I had a Superchips in my truck when i bought it.
With my experience when i switched over to a PHP chip i did not notice "more" power. I noticed a smoother throttle, beter MPG and lower EGT's all the wile still producing as much power as the superchips.
With our Injectors a tuner can only produce X amount of power. No company out there can build more power then our injectors will allow. With that said, if you were to dyno PHP vs Swamps vs Gearhead vs edge vs superchips, they MAY all produce the exact same amount of power but how the power is delivered will be different between each company. Fuel curve, timing, air ratio will all be different between each tuner along with other things.
My superchips throttle was touchy and had high EGT's but good power.
PHP tunes ease into the power nice and smooth and my EGT's are 200 degrees lower.
I think your question of "is it worth it" is really up to how you are going to use your truck. If your going to tow a lot i would get custom tunes for the sole purpose of lower EGT's. If its a grocery getter and dump runner then you wont see much benefit to custom tunes.
