Yeah, is there a compressor wheel you can get that'll give more boost AND a lot of turbo noise?

Works well

When I updated my early '99 to later/larger turbo, and plumbing I also put in a wheel, and also did the ATS housing as I was getting that horrible turbo surge. This was about 3 years ago, and at that time there was only about 3 outfits out there selling these wheels with one being Banks but it was built a little different. The one I have is called a "wicked wheel".
I got rid of the turbo serge, and the turbo spools up very fast with no lag, and this has been on the truck like I said 3 years ago.
My turbo sounds like a 18 wheeler with my AFE intake, and makes people smile when they hear it.
Now I cannot say exactly how much the wheel helps because I did the ATS housing at the same time but at the time I did this there were others who only did the wheel, and they said it made their turbo spool up faster, and made it louder so I am assuming(and you know what that means ) that the ATS housing got rid of my turbo serge, and the wheel made the turbo spool up faster, and give it that cool whine.
This is just my .02 cents, and not sure what help I have been but know I love the sound of the turbo, and can really hear it outside the truck as well as inside, and have not heard a Ford Powerstroke around the Reno area that is as loud from the turbo.

Thanks for the info Larry. So far my turbo is pretty darn loud for stock, unless the prior owner has modified it or replaced it before I bought it with 112k miles. I still have a stock intake, only with a TruFlow filter. It filters very well but I am pretty sure it's a lot more restrictive than others. I was curious as to how much louder my turbo would be with something like the k&n or AFE with their filters being open air and not all closed up in a box, so I went to the school one sunday and took out my filter and closed the air box and did a shot across the long parking lot that's about two football fields and back. It was a heck of a lot louder....even through the airbox that was closed....

99Smokin-

I don't know if you have an early 99 or the later 99 but if you have the earlier model like I have your air from the outside comes in from your fenderwell, and there is another free mod that you can do which will give you more air. Inside the fenderwell is a snorkle that can be taken out which restricts the amount of air that comes in. Just take out some of the screws which holds the black plastic fender liner in, and reach up inside, and you will find this snorkle which is about 12-14" long, and 6" wide. Feel how it is connected, and take it out, and you will get much more air going to the airbox, and to your turbo.
What I did also was got a AFE Stage 1 as at that time(3-4 years ago) was the only AFE made, and combined it with the newerstyle stock airbox so that I am getting air from the fenderwell, and from the front through the grill, and it really makes the turbo whistle, and get plenty of air. Plus did the Zoodad trick to make a larger hole behind the grill to get more air in.
Sorry I got off the subject here but with all the extra air plus the higher speed compressor wheel really makes that turbo spool up fast, and louder.
Again I apologize for hijacking this thread, and explaining it because it will make the compressor wheel work better if you get one if you have the newer larger turbo. If you have the smaller early 99 turbo then I don't think you can get a compressor wheel for it but then again I have had mine for a few years, and they may have come out with one for the smaller turbo by an aftermarket company.
Hope I have been of some help.

Larry

Hey Larry mine is an early 99. I did something similiar to your zoodad mod, or at least I think. I'll get a picture tomorrow of what I did and you can tell me if it's what you're talking about or similiar. I might have to just remove that snorkel too.
Oh and don't worry about hijacking the thread. It happens often to us all, someone mentions one thing and we all wanna know about it. Oh well!
like I said i'll get a few pix on tomorrow.....thanks!

Adam!

Sounds good, and you won't regret removing the snorkle as the turbo needs all the air it can get.
