programmer Q's

First off, I just joined this site and let me say that its awesome. Now for my question. I would like to install a programmer on my 99. I've checked into a couple of different ones but really would like to know what the best one out there is. Also, I have got 2 buddies that also have 99's, one has a Edge and the other has Banks 110 Hp chip, and they both have wiped the Automatic out. This is a problem I would like to stay away from. Any suggestions?

Hey Stomper, welcome to Powerstroke.org! Glad you're enjoying the site! I'll let some of the other members with your year model field your programmer question. We've got a bunch of great folks here that are always willing to help.

I've got the Hypertech on mine and love it. Plenty of power, plenty of smoke, also plenty of EGT's so make sure whatever one you go with make sure you get gauges. With the gauges you could also see when the tranny temp is getting to warm so that you wouldnt trash it at tleast not right away. I think that the tranny should be built if you wanna add lots of power. Just my 2 cents.

unfortunatly, I have not had personal experience with all the programmers out there, so I am not going to offer advice for that one, HOWEVER, it should be noted that no matter what, you need to get the gauges for your truck if you do any type of power boosting. That is why people eat up trannys and turbos, from lack of knowlege about their truck. In fact, as long as you have the gauges and know what temps your truck runs at normally and also where hot temps are hot enough, you would be just fine with a hot chip like either of the ones that your buddys have. May I also suggest that you get and AFE air intake system because Ford really messed up when they put the stock filter that they did in and your run a super high risk of getting dust in your engine and or turbo with it. But once you install that AFE, your risk is gone and your truck loves you for the way it can breathe!!!

Hope this helps, and welcome to the site!!!

Thanks for the info Red and Turbo. Yes, the intake is a area that I will improve on after reading about some of your turbo issues, Turbo. The gages are a must, (upon further looking into, neither of my buddies have them), along with a 4" down pipe into a 5" exhaust.

Talking Programmer Q's

I know Rodslinger has the Diablo and don't know who else does. Has anybody updated there programmer??? I have the cable and power source in the shop. I down loaded the install software and program update on my laptop. Now dummy here has to see if he's smart enough to transfer the new program. Did you know you can buy custom burn the tires to the rim programs from Diablo and they will e-mail them to you so you can upgrade from home!! Cool stuff huh. I'll probably end up having to ask one of my boys help me with the computer. I can't work on it if I can't use an air wrench!!!

Stomper I think it's more of a personal preference thing than it is the "best chip out there" thing. There's a lot of good chips available and they're all priced differently of course. I had a superchip microtuner that worked great, but I wanted the in-cab adjustability so I dumped it for a TS Performance chip. It rocks for just a chip alone. I wanna do some other things but as always it's money permitting...

I haven't upgraded mine yet although I do keep an eye out from time to time to see what rev's they've got. I'd like to try one of those programs like you're talking about Ramsmoker......just once of course.

I just found an Edge last night from a buddy, but I can't remember which one it is. 60/120 Hp, 14 months old, $100. I'm going to try it out before I buy it to see how she does. Sound like a pretty good deal, or should I pass?
