Anybody have problems with a new Garrett BB leaking oil?
I have a new one I just put on as my stocker was pouring oil. Things were great the first day and then it started smoking again. It does it after it sits idling for a while, like when you are in the car line at school. It's fine while idling, but as soon as you pull out onto the highway, the smoke rolls until it finally clears up and then it's fine as long as you are moving. This is really starting to suck. I guess I will be pulling the turbo again for the third time.

Yes. It has the CCV mod, so you can see the little bit of smoke/steam coming out sometimes when you are idling. It's not much, but there is some. It has the same volume of steam/smoke coming out now as it did years ago when I done the mod, so I feel that's not the problem. I am taking the stock turbo to be rebuilt so I have one to use while the Garrett is being looked at. I'll see how it does. If it acts the same way, I guess there is something in the engine causing a problem. Maybe a leaking injector o-ring?? Thanks, David |

What type of CCV mod do you have?? I have seen the Garrett puff smoke if you try to run a hose the length of the truck. Mine did it when i had that setup. I rerouted it to run through a catch can then back to the intake. I does not smoke that way. I believe the long hose causes excessive back pressure @ idle as it does not have the incoming air velocity to help pull a vacuum on the CCV hose. I had this issue years ago with my 1st Garrett. If i sat ideling for 5 min it would puff a huge cloud of blue smoke. When i changed to the H2e it stopped doing this. I just recently went back to the Garrett and it has started doing this again. That is why i rerouted the hose to the intake and it stopped. I do have friends running a hose that is only 6' and it drops straight down with no catch can and they do not have this problem with thier Garrett. This is just my opinion and my experience for what it is worth. |

Well, I simply pulled the hose off the vc and it seems the smoke has stopped. I'm going to continue to drive it and make sure, but it seems much better. I still get a small puff when I start it in the morning, but I can live with that. I may just connect the CCV back to the intake pipe. Thanks for your help guys!! David Willingham |

Yes, it has always been kinked some. I was going to buy a formed 90* hose and connect it to the straight hose, I just haven't got around to it yet. I started a new machine shop and don't have much time to work on my own stuff, so I hire my Dad to work on it. He put the hose on there and kinked it, but didn't worry about it because it did seem to be working. It wasn't causing any problems at the time, but within a few months my stock turbo started blowing oil. Now the new turbo is starting to do the same thing, so I bet the kinked CCV hose may have killed the first turbo. I'm just glad to know we may have fixed it. I spent $3000 on the truck with the new turbo, new AFE II, regulated return, muffler delete with my 4" exhaust, DP Tuner re-burned the chip to 140 hp, changed all fluids to synthetic, and fixed many oil leaks. I was really starting to get frustrated that the truck was still smoking. I hope all is good now. Now let's get some injectors!!

It's very likely your stock turbo is fine as well. The extra crank case pressure doesn't allow the oil to return from the turbo properly and causes it to blow into the compressor. Once the crank case pressure is gone it will most likely not leak anymore.
