tuner question

My friend has a 1999 F-350 dually 7.3 2X4. He wants to get a tuner for better mpg's and a little more power. I don't know anything about the 7.3. What are his options? Which is the best tuner for he 7.3? Any input is appreciated guys.

well you can get any of the canned tuners, but there aren't very many people that like them and prefer custom tuning using a ts 6 pos switch. with that you can go with tuning from tony wildman, matt at gearhead, swamps, or beans to name a few. For what it's worth, I'm going with gearhead in the next couple of days. THe custom tunes are awesome because they are tunes that are specific to your truck and they are the exact tunes that you want
Edit: so if i would say anything, I would tell him to go with a ts 6 pos switch with custom tuning from any of the ones that I listed. They all have awesome reviews and I haven't heard anything bad about any of them

Good info thanks. So can he get the 6 position chip with canned tuning until he gets custom tunes or if he goes with the 6 position chip does he have to get custom tuning right away?

he doesn't have to get custom tuning right away he can get the tunes that come right from ts which, i believe, are Stock, High Idle, 50hp, 75hp, 100hp, 140+ Extreme and those are the canned tunes that come with every ts 6 pos switch if you get it from xdp or alligator performance, but if he does that and decides he wants custom tuning usually tuners charge around $200 to reburn it and put their tunes on it. and custom tuning from the get go is around $400
Edit: and FWIW I wouldn't go with a smoke tune as they will harm a diesel engine over time

Oh ok. I was looking at the tuner from Rudy's diesel. I am not sure which tunes that comes with. How hard is it to install? Is it fairly simple?

I haven't heard of them, but if it's custom tuning you can usually pick what tunes what you get, if its just the tunes that come from ts you get what you get (the tunes i listed earlier) and idk how hard it is to install because I haven't installed one yet (it will be my first time with a tuner) but they usually give you instructions and from what i've heard its not hard at all

Slight misinformation above, but not too far off. The php Phoenix six position chip which utilizes the base ts 6 pos switch with their custom tunes is 300. You can get base ts chip for just under 300, like 298. I have the php which doesn't hardly smoke at all, very minimal as it is tuned to my specific PCM code. A friend of mine just got the base ts chip and it smokes like a son of a gun. If you want cheap custom tunes, get the Phoenix. Or get ts base for same price and pay an extra 200 later for custom burns from reputable tuner (php, beans, swamps and others). Or for 425 look into php hydra which loads tunes from several tuners.

So is this the one he would need? If not where would he get the Phoenix one?
