I have had mine apart numerous times. The shim I like the best is a #6 machine screw with the head diameter ground down to the diameter of the spring and ground flat on the end till the screw slot is barely visable. This way you can turn the screw in and out to fine tune the pressure. I played with mine from 57 to 130 and back to 75.

I tried all the tricks
like Ramsmoker even the screwhead, and the BB but of all the ones the spring which was made for this mod worked the best. Even tried the shim(spacer) but I just did not feel right, and even after I checked my fuel pressure several times over a few months, and the last time last fall after 4 years, and over 100,000 miles my fuel pressure stayed the same, and again with never a problem. BUT as they say different strokes the spring worked the best for me, and you asked what, and how it was done Dan, and this is just my .02 cents from my personal experience having had it that way for so long.Larry |

Larry, What pressure did your spring give you. I had read many posts about this and it seamed to me that 70 was an average. I don't know now who's diesel site I was on last week and they had the spring for $20.00 and was supposed set the pressure at 95. Now that I have been there and know that they do run great at 95, I'm think'n bout turning mine out again.

Spring aftermarket
Like I mentioned above I got this spring over 4 years ago, and being old forgot where I got it but it was the best mod going at the time over the spacer, BB, and screwhead, and apologize about not remembering where I got it but do remember it was only made for this particular application, and was only made to give you approximately 75 lbs of pressure, and mine gave me exactly 75 lbs. I can find out where I got it as another fellow who is a friend of mine got his at the same time, and his results were the same, and he still has his truck as well with over 140,000 miles on his with no problem with doing the mod. I will contact him via of e-mail as he is in California, and see if he remembers where we got them, and will post here when I get an answer. The price if I remember was less than $5 though, and not an expensive item like some things on these trucks of ours ![]() Larry |

Wellllllllllll !
I e-mailed my friend in Cali, and he said he did not think the dealer was in business anymore, and did not know where else to get the springs, and he being much younger than I, and keeps up on this stuff did say that the newer stuff you guys are talking about being the potentometer, and that also there is a new shim kit out for the regulator as well that they both work quite well so am sorry I got you guys all hyped up for nothing as far as the spring goes
But you are not dead in the water with having the other 2 ways to go, and if the shims or potentometer work as good as the spring you would feel it is worth it to up the fuel pressure regulator to the approximate 75 lbs with the response it develops. BUT make sure you don't go over that as the truck won't like the higher pressures.Sorry I could not be of more help. As far as the pics with it being so cold here right now just will with me be a chicken to get out in the cold weather that as you take off the Powerstroke lid(cover over the fuel canister), and looking at the fuel canister it is the connector which is the fuel regulator connected to the end of the hard fuel line which attaches to the right side of the canister near the top of it which has 2 bolts to hold it on the canister.Guess I should not have bragged about the spring so much but have been so pleased with results of changing it, and how it has been trouble free did not think it would not be available any longer. Again I apologize, and if I find out anything more of how the best way to do this will post it here. Larry |
