What year truck and California? It could be a bypass muffler or fake cat?

Its a resonator. helps keep your truck quiet.

They do 2 things,

Quiet down your exhaust and create a little back pressure which you don't want or need on a diesel.

If you like the quiet keep it. If you dont mind it sounding like a diesel, straight pipe it.
