What exactly is gained by getting rid of the foil?

Added noise in the cab and maybe some like the way the bare pipe looks. Nothing else.

No REAL performance gain, however it SOUNDS like you put a new turbo on her.

The downside, it's messy and it'll take a while to remove, the glue is really hard to get off and the foil is sharp.

Cool foil

Wow, I've been going the other way. I have double wrapped all the tube to see if I can stop the heat saturation. Hey if I wanted noise I'd put a Cypress hill cd in and crank her up.

it is when you take the foil off of the intercooler pipe on the drivers side
