just purchased a 7.3, some questions please tune in

Well, I drove 510 miles and bought a 2003 7.3 excursion with 117k miles on it. Has a cold air intake, 4" mbrp exhaust, and the 38r garret turbo upgrade. Supposedly the ecm is stock. However we got 19.1 mpg hand calc. and I wasn't driving for mileage. The thing puts out a decent puff of smoke from a stop and hazes black smoke at wot, which has me wondering if there is a tune in the ecm? Anyways, this vehicle will be pulling our race trailer 80% of its life. What would be a good tuner/programmer to get for towing? The tranny is stock and I don't want to roast it, and I don't want to hinder the mileage it gets, just want some more grunt for towing. I also plan on getting an edge insight for it. I use it on my cummins and like it. Also, anything I shoud watch for with this 7.3?

What kind of cold air intake does it have? as for mileage your probably on the high end for a 7.3l. that coupled with the lack of heavy smoke at WOT makes me think the previous owner had some sort of a program tuner that the pcm still has stored.

I know alot of guys have had success with ts 6 position tuners. I myself have the SCT programmer. I like it i have a tow tune and a 140 hp tune, it came with the truck so i dont know exact specifics but its worked good for what i use it for.

As for things to watch for i would get gauges (boost, pyro, tranny temp) to watch your vitals. Other than that the 7.3 will treat you just as good as you treat it.

Go with a 6pos chip to not roast the trans, definitely get gauges to monitor the vitals. check the cold air intake make sure its not k&n

Are you looking to go with a chip(plugs into the PCM) or a programmer(plugs into the OBDII port)?

We can get you setup with either if you are interested. HERE is a link to all of our custom tuning options.

As for the mileage... That is really good, especially for an Excursion. The black smoke may point to the PCM being flashed or a tune loaded onto the PCM. You could always just as the person you purchased it from.

I went from a Diablo Predator tuner to a PHP Hydra Chip (stores up to 17 tunes, and can accept custom tunes from nearly any tuner out there, except DP) and the difference was huge.

I used the 80 Tow tune this weekend and the trans tuning along made a big difference but the power difference was awesome. Never needed more than half throttle up some big hills, and that was mostly just because I wanted to see what power it had. Kinda funny getting onto the freeway and having people pull out from behind to pass you then you get on it and they just stay behind.

I was going to look into a dp tuner, tried calling several times with no answer, so I ordered a Pheonix chip with the 6 tunes. What are some decent trans upgrades? I was thinking maybe a torque converter, and different valve body?? I don't need an all out trans, just maybe something that can withstand the task of time with a trailer on it.

I just bought a 2002 Excursion that is completely stock and at WOT it does not smoke any color at all blue, white, black nothing is this good or bad?
