Engine oil temps
I wanted to know what the oil temp should be at and what is too high. the other day pulling a 20000 load over mount eagle the oil temp got up to 245 is that a bad thing or normal. it normally runs around 230 pulling loads in normal hills. if it is too high what do i need to do to fix it.

I wouldn't let it go much over 230 myself. What is your coolant temp at the time? EGT's?
I opened up the front end of the truck and used a pressure-washer "gun" converter to be used as a blow-out gun for an air compressor and spent a half an hour just blowing out the rad, coolers, and such in the front of the truck. I immediately noticed a decrease in coolant and oil temps when pulling a load. Just a thought! |

Those temps are a little too high. The optimum temperature for these engines is right around 190-200*. There is still a lot of controversy on this subject, so I am sure you will get different opinions than mine.
Have you replaced the thermostat or water pump yet? How about cleaned out the radiator? Last edited by Justin@DP-Tuner; 12-22-2012 at 08:47 PM. |

My oil temps usually run between 205-225 when towing depending on the ambient temps. On the flip side, my coolant temps run between 170-175. I'm running a new stock thermostat. Oil temp readings are from the stock sensor read thru my Insight and the coolant temp is using the Edge sensor installed at the water pump.
