Wow... That scares me! I had the boot break on mine, but it was a bit of an alignment issue I believe. I took some time when reinstalling it and got it lined up correctly. But the filter blowing up like that... I hope mine doesn't decide to do that! Call AFE and they might send u a new one... They replaced my boot no questions asked.

My theory is the filter became brittle from heat and the sock picked up oil from the filter combined with enough dust to restrict flow to the point that the filter imploded. I did contact AFE only to be told that it's a two year warranty. I pointed out to them that it's advertized on just about every site as a lifetime warranty and they eventually agreed to send me a new filter. I am happy with AFE for doing the right thing but still worried about the filter holding up. For now I am not installing the sock. The original filter was purchased November 07 so it took a while to get to this point.

Have you tried the 6637?
Ive had good luck with mine so far. It has a metal cage around it and looks like it would be stronger than the AFE style. Like the dryer hose fix tho! Funny what things we come up with when in a pinch! |

I installed a 6637 on a friends truck but I already have the AFE setup and it's about 5.5" IIRC at the opening so I would need to find a different filter to fit the tube. As long as this new filter doesn't start cracking it will stay put, just going to be keeping a closer eye on it for now on. The AFE has a metal cage too and it's fairly firm so whatever happened took a lot of force.

That looks like what happens when a filter gets clogged, the turbo tries to eat it. I have my inspectors license for texas and on diesels most guys pop the hood shut it and call it good. Waste of time to check under the hood on a vehicle that doesn't matter to the state computer.
On edit: the metal cage doesn't help much. I've seen a 7.3 partially eat a stock air box filter, the metal piece that's on that and all. |
