NEWB to Powerstroke.org!!!

Hey guys whats up? Names Jeremy and I am new to this forum.

Just got myself a 2000 F-250 7.3L Diesel and already in a dilemma when it comes to purchasing a chip. Already have a 4" SS turbo back exhaust, gettin a S&B Stage 2 intake and some pillar gauges. The only problem I am having is what chip to purchase and w custom or canned, then if i buy canned do i buy a chip that can be re burnt. Been looking at a TS 6pos chip, The tunes Ill be gettin will be custom as well by Cale. I am worried tho because I have been gettin some feed back about about runnin custom tunes w out HPOP and if i get some that are too advanced for my stock oil pump my truck will fall flat on its face. I have been informed to buy a reburnable chip that comes w canned tunes at first till i can afford to get my HPOP and then send it back in and have it re burnt for $100 or so. I am very new to the realm of diesel so i could be gettin played. I just dont want to buy something wrong or inferior for my truck then have to re buy that same part later down the road when I start making more upgrades under the hood... I really need someone info I can trust. I know this is an over load on my first post but hey, dont wanna ruin my truck or be wasting my money.

Thanks guys,'

Jeremy

I'm not sure who told you all that garbage about custom tunes killing your truck if you dont have a certain HPOP but you should slap them. The whole point of custom tunes is custom tuned to YOUR truck. If you want custom tunes to your stock HPOP then that is what you get, you will not get custom tunes to your truck that is burnt for anything other than what you tell them. I went with Tony Wildman tunes, (highly recommended but there are others which a simple search will show you) when you order the chip you tell him what all you have done to your truck and he burns you a chip for your setup and he also offers free reburns if you were to add more mods.

Understand that just because a chip vendor offers a tune, it does not mean that tune will work on your truck. Examples - 120 and 140hp tunes. Almost all vendors sell one, but customers will see no benefit from the 140 over the 120. Most will find the 120 too taxing on their stock equipment and instead use a 100hp tune for fun.

Also, your truck is for all intents and purposes stock. The exhaust and intake are not doing much for your setup and probably wont make a difference in the canned tune a vendor slaps on the TS chip. You're limitations are the injectors and HPOP.

Get the standard 60hp tow, 80 daily driver and 100 hp race (for fun). Anything above 100 is a waste. I'd also look into adding a stock position and 1100 rpm idle for faster warm ups.

A final note: Some vendors like to use a TC lock up for deceleration @~40mph. Its a nice feature for towing and drag racing, but annoying for normal driving. make sure you discuss this feature with the vendor and ask they remove it from the 80dd tune

The OP will get the same 80dd tune that everyone else gets with a similar configuration, not a custom tune written just for his truck.

Unless the OP goes to the vendor, puts the truck on the dyno and pays for a custom tune, they are NOT getting a custom tune. They are getting a canned, widely used and distributed tune which has been modified by the vendor with their own little changes to the map. The vendor offers all sorts of flavors and slaps them on when you order. They don't care that your truck cant produce enough HPOP pressure or fuel volume to get all the power out of a 140. If you want it, they will slap it on.

So if the vendor I'm buying from days they're giving my custom tunes, but I'm not actually there to get it dyno'd as well... It's not custom? Dont quite understand.

you are right in a sense...when I think of canned tunes I think of programmers and such that you can buy that are made for all 7.3s (99-03 or any block years) for example the banks module or edge products. When I think of custom tunes I think of chips that use what you have on you truck along with your build date and VDM codes and then you have the live tunes with which you talk about. I have never heard live tuning referred to custom tunes even though it is custom tuning.
