02 7.3L Banks Ottomind/six-gun problems
I have a 2002 7.3L and I just bought it and I'm slowly finding out what the other owners have done to it. I noticed that it has a banks ottomind ecu chip, and a banks six-gun tunner system. It aslo has a BigHead Wastegate, Transcommand, Banks turbo back monster exhaust with no cat and gauges for Boost and Trans Temp. After doing some research on everything I started checking to see if all of this stuff is installed correctly, I found that the ottomind needs the MAP sensor signal wire to be grounded. So I grounded this wire becuase it wasnt and now the Six-Gun system throws up faults for high boost and something else they were error codes 1 and 4.
can someone shead some light on this for me? are these systems not compatable? did someone mess up a install somewhere else? any help would be great! thanks again. Matt |

The high boost code: I can't remember the exact boost amount but if your truck boosts up to around 23 it will throw The ses light on. The only fix for that is to install a boost fooler or boost anhilator. With the mods that u have it is possible that u might have a boost fooler if that is the case then the code that you are seeing I am not sure about.

Im not 100% sure, I just got the truck about a month ago. The owner I bought it from got it from a dealer about 2 years ago and he he said he didn't have any history about the truck. he just say that he knows that there is a lot of aftermarket parts on the truck. so Im slowly finding what has been done to the truck. but as I find things Im trying to make sure everything is hooked up and working properly. so when I found that it had the ottomind I saw that it needed the ground wire and it wasn't hooked up but it had been tapped and there was a strap on it but not connected. when I connected it, it sent the six-gun in to a frenzy. Im just trying to make sure that everything is working.

The ottomind and six gun are two different programers? I think you are able to use the ottomind to gain power but the six gun is for adding power only. If I were you I'd take the ottomind out. The error codes are the two tuners trying to fight each other for adding power...

Thanks for the info, I think I'm going to pull the ottomind out and and see what happens from there. its not really using it if its not hooked up properly? I might actually get better performance as well if I pull the ottomind out so the two systems arnt fighting anymore over power. Thanks for the info again, Im pretty new to all this and Im just trying to figure out whats going to work best.

Yes, pull the ottomind. The six gun will give you more added power. I do know many people with the 4r100 tranny cooking them running the Banks setup. Having run Banks on my truck I will say I'm not impressed with the transmission. I just ordered an SCT X3 from IDP and am going to be running custom tuning mainly for the transmission. If I were you, I would get rid of your Banks setup and get a tuner that allows for transmission tuning. Your truck will love you more, especially because in your sig. it says your running 37's.

Yea I have 37's on it, I always thought banks was the best around? Im new to the diesel world but banks is everywhere. So when I bought the truck and saw all this banks stuff on it I thought "Ohh sweet all top of the line stuff nothing half ***" but the more I'm on here and reading it seems like people don't really like banks all the much?

It's funny because all the big names in the diesel world (banks, bully dog, edge, etc) are usually the worst for your truck. Banks is really just over priced. I got a 6 gun cheap so i used it as a pyro and now it's just sitting around because no one will buy banks stuff.

Banks products are pretty top of the line, but they aren't necessarily complete for satisfying people's needs. Compare Banks to SCT. Banks makes a tuner, SCT makes a tuner. Banks is all in one, shift on the fly while SCT isn't. Banks cost 2x the price SCT turns the truck into a whole new animal. Banks has canned tunes, SCT has custom tuning. It's mainly what everybody wants out of there truck. I know more people that are somewhat uneducated about their diesel truck are gonna go with a Banks system because it's all over the trucks on spike tv or it's the first link on google when you search for adding power to your diesel or something along those lines. At the end of the day more people are gonna go with the Banks because it's marketed more. Again, they got some cool ****, but there are others far superior to it.

BANKS IS CRAP.
Please do yourself a favor and trash it. Or sell it to some poor, unknowing soul on ebay like I did... lol Best thing it's used for is a paper weight or throwing at your girlfriend/fiance/wifes cat. And SCT is not the thing to get for a 7.3 either btw. What you need is TW, TS, PHP, DP, etc... |
