Hey wanting a new turbo, what do you guys think of a garrett 38r? If you have one could you tell a difference in power gains over stock turbo? Also how much boost are you getting? Im not looking for high hp numbers just something a little more than i have right now, stage one or two injectors coming soon.
I have one and wish I had gone with a different setup. I bought the turbo, and its good, but then I had to do uppipes. Should have just gone with Irates kit and turbo. As for power over stock, not really noticble. Does clean up the smoke nice though on stock sticks.
Exactly for what I paid for the 38r and having the exhaust housing ceramic coated I could have bought a t4 mount kit and a bigger turbo to grow with later on down the road, don't get me wrong it's a nice turbo but it's not am huge increase in power especially on a stock engine
I like mine. Spools quicker, has better sound. I did my up-pipes at the same time since they were leaking and deleted the ebpv for extra flow. The factory look is nice for smog etc. EGTs lowered a bit. I got mine on sale so less than $1400.
Besides quicker spool up and cleaning up the smoke better you wont see a huge huge gain over just a chipped truck Hp wise maybe 20-30hp at the most it's a nice little upgrade from stock vut don't expect your truck to turn into a rocket, the chip is gonna gain you way more than the turbo will, I don't know what your other mods are but you could bu a set of stage 1 injectors and a chip and have way more power than jut slapping a 38r on It
riffraffdiesel.com sell bellowed up-pipes for i believe $414. On a side-note, are you running 3.73s with that 6" lift. If you are I'd swap that gearing out for 4.10s or 4.56s. My uncle is running an 8" lift and 38s with 4.56s. He said that is near enough for those tires. I could be wrong, maybe someone else could add their input.
I'm going to try and make Atleast 550 on my 38r but what I'm saying is just dropping in a 38r on a pretty much stock truck with a chip you aren't going to see a huge gains that's why I say if your stock turbo is in good shape to get a chip and a set of stage 1s or something and get a lot more power than just the 38r
Hope you have plans for a built trans then... If you go the hybrids route you should probably go with a t4 style mount and turbo, more room to grow in.
Well then it looks like i might just go with some stage 1s (maybe later on ill go bigger) and would the adrenaline hpop be good? Or would you guys suggest some other brand of hpop? Iv been reading on them and it seems like most who have the adrenaline like them.
Haha I was wondering how long it would take Bruce to make a comment bad mouthing the adrenaline lol, I have one on my truck as well and it works grat and maintains all the pressure I need... Not to mention Bob is one of the nicest guys around to deal with.
i wouldn't waste the money on the adrenaline, for a little money you can get a lot more pump in the srp1 or you can save some money and go witht he t500 and it will do pretty good
Well in just a few months we will find out what the truck will make with 250/200s and the 1.15 housing on the 38r will it make 647 at 2890 psi with 38% duty cycle prob not but I will bet money all day it will hold enough pressure at a low enough duty cycle to be just fine... But you can wait for it if you want just make sure you are holding your breath
I agree with you on the 38r part it's more of a how much will it make thing... Bcause yes I know I could make more power with a t4 mount setup and a different turbo and honestly could have done for probably less than what I have in the 38r as for the pump we will see.. I will make sure to post up some the data logging of the pressure and duty cycle when I get the truck back down to Bill's in feb.
i'm callin 60% duty cycle, hell you could prolly make the same power on 80 or 100 nozzles because the pump will be fallin behind so bad, but you can always sell it and put that money towards a srp1
lol Well I'm not looking to make 600+hp I'm just trying to have a reliable truck with some extra power to pull trailers or beat my buddies trucks lol. So I'm up for any suggestions.
I have recently done stage 1s and custom tune from beans, bad dude trans rebuild from Century Automatics (wow what a difference!!!) and replaced my up pipes with stockers.
My turbo (early 99 model truck) is leaking badly and Im looking to replace it, suggestions here, dependable is key. I haul a 13,000 lb trailer.
I was really leaning towards the D66 and custom pedestle for ease and dependablilty.
take that raggedy a$$ rc lift off and go back to 265's
