Newb 7.3 questions
Nice forum! I have a 2003 450 with the good ole 7.3. It currently has a Superchips tuner, K&N filter and 4" exhaust. I installed a set of gauges too. The truck is a work truck and pulls most of the time that it's driven. It just has 33k miles on it so it sits a bunch.
Ok, I have noticed lately that the newer trucks have a little more power on the hwy than this one does. And my aftermarket exhaust is already rusted out in places so it's time for some upgrades. I want some input from you experts. Is there something better than my Superchips tuner? Who makes an affordable exhaust for a long wheel base 450? Will an aftermarket turbo make it run better and cooler? Do I need injectors? I was told not to run the truck over 900 degrees on the egt gauge. But, I have read on here where people are running much hotter. Should I worry with 900 degrees on long hill pulls? PS I am in the mountains at over 5000 feet mostly pulling at slow speeds on 2 lane roads. Thanks in advance everyone. |

Where is your egt probe mounted? If it's in the manifold, you can go to around 1250deg. If it's in the downpipe, 900 is about right. Get a custom tuned chip, and you'll be amazed with the difference. I had a superchip, then I got a TWildman chip(totaldieselperformance.com), and there isn't any comparison. There are several guys who can get you a ton more power than you have now. I also suggest a water injection kit. I tow nearly every day, and had to let off when my egt's got too high. Now I can drive as fast as I want and not have to worry about overheating.

To the best of my knowledge 1350 egt is the majic # 2 back off from, that is pre turbo subtract 300 if post turbo... A larger turbo will pack more air in2 the intake this can cause 2 things turbo choke or serge pointvery un desirabul points for you...OK b4 jumping into a larger turbo the present turbo needs to b mapped.. and if it is spining 2 fast it needs a larger turbo.. Dont waist $$ in just arbaterly purchacing a new one......
Injectors on these engines are VERY pricey so dont just toss them in on a whim eihter... if you have added chips or what ever to incerease power, u might need larger injectiors, (as in more fule delivered to the cylender),again for this have some1 who knows these things do an evulation of the engine hope htis helps you an saves you a buck or 2 good luck <<<<<<BILL>>>>>> |
