DIY compressor housing port?

Is it possible to port the stock compressor housing out to 4" from 3" instead of buying a whole new piece for $400+ or is the new housing just a bigger cast piece with the same wall thickness?

No. The stock turbocharger inlet is maybe 3.5" O.D. at the most. 3" inlet with .25" walls. Besides, drop-in 7.3L turbochargers with a 4" inlet (as well as the ATS ported compressor housing) still use a near 3" inlet. Yes, they use a 4" inlet hose, but the actual compressor inlet is only slightly larger than the stock inlet.

I think you're misapplying the term "ported" here. The "ported" you're thinking of is actually enlarging the inlet of the compressor housing at the inducer side of the compressor wheel. "Ported" in a technical sense means that there is an actual bleed port that is cast into the compressor housing around the inducer that partly bleeds off a bit of the inlet air......thus making the compressor slightly less efficient and helping move the surge line of the compressor map left a little bit.

Sweet, thank you for clarifying. I'm sure other newbees will also appreciate the explanation.
