How to tell if truck has a chip/been programmed...

I've been having problems getting a programmer to recognize my truck. The programmer was returned to stock and it still gave me an error. I was just thinking that the truck may have been chipped/programmed by the previous owner, and I was wondering what I can do to verify this. If it's chipped, the pcm will have a chip installed on it, correct? What if it has been programmed with superchips, hypertech, etc? any way to tell that?
