i have also recently bought a 38r and i'm having trouble. it only turns 23lbs of boost and sounds like its blowing a lot of air the truck runs really good empty but it feels like its under power with a heavy load. i have a big head wastegate and i've unhooked the hose to the gate trying to build more boost. a cant get an ideas from anyone on here. what kind of boost wil yours turn

The gate diaphram and rod you'll find on the 38R is the same one found on the stock turbo.

Disconnecting the red hose only disables the wastegate solenoid that assists in opening the gate to control boost. Drive pressure can still force the gate open.

I'd check for boost / pre-turbo exhaust leaks if I was you.
